Technical Fabric Selection

Activewear fabrics must perform under stress — moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, breathability, and durability are non-negotiable. Common fabrics include nylon-spandex blends, polyester-elastane, and recycled performance fabrics. Fabric weight typically ranges from 180-260 GSM depending on the garment type.

Fit Engineering

Unlike casual wear, activewear requires precise fit engineering. Compression garments need specific stretch ratios. Leggings require flatlock seaming to prevent chafing. Sports bras need graduated support zones. Pattern making for activewear is a specialized skill that directly impacts product performance.

Construction Techniques

Flatlock stitching is the industry standard for activewear seams — it lies flat against the skin and prevents irritation during movement. Bonded seams offer a clean, seamless finish for premium products. Laser cutting provides precise edges that do not fray.

Sublimation and Printing

Sublimation printing is the preferred method for activewear, allowing all-over prints that do not affect fabric performance. The ink bonds with polyester fibers at a molecular level, creating prints that will not crack, peel, or fade through washing and wear.

Quality Testing

Activewear must pass rigorous testing for colorfastness, pilling resistance, stretch recovery, and moisture management. Establish clear testing protocols with your manufacturer before production begins.
